Prof. Dr. Fabio Ciravegna is Full Professor of Language and Knowledge Technologies at USFD. He coordinates the Web Intelligence Technologies Lab, a group of around 20 between researchers and students. His research field concerns Human Language related technologies for Web Intelligence and the Semantic Web, with focus on Knowledge Management applications. He is Director of the European Integrated Project IST X-Media (15 partners and €13.6M budget, www.x-media-project.org) on large scale knolwedge management across media and principal investigator in the EU IP WeKnowIt (http://www.weknowit.eu) on Managing Collective Intelligence.
He is principal investigator in the project IPAS co-funded by Rolls-Royce plc and the UK Department of Trade and Industry for knowledge management for jet engines.
He is principal investigator in three industrial projects funded by Rolls-Royce plc on knowledge management for jet engine designers, Kodak Eastman on management of digital photography and Lycos on Web knowledge management. In the past he was director of the EU project Dot.Kom (http://nlp.shef.ac.uk/dot.kom/) and co-investigator in the EPSRC IRC AKT project (www.aktors.org)
Fabio is service manager for "Roadmapping Semantic Technologies" for STI International (http://www.sti2.org/).
He has published more than seventy papers in international journals, conferences and workshops. He is part of the editorial board of the International Journal on "Web Semantics" and of the International Journal of Human Computer Studies. He is director of research of K-Now, a spin-off company of the University of Sheffield focusing on supporting dynamic distributed communities in large organizations. He holds a PhD from the University of East Anglia and a doctorship from the University of Torino, Italy
Title: Supporting knowledge management in large distributed organisations using semantic web technologies
Abstract: In this talk I will present and discuss challenges and requirements for Semantic Web technologies when confronted with the task of knowledge acquisition and sharing in large complex distributed environments (e.g. large companies). Acquisition is defined here as the process of: (1) extracting facts from and annotating existing multi- and cross-media resources, both unstructured (e.g. texts, images, data, etc.) and structured (e.g. existing databases); (2) information and knowledge integration across resources and media. Sharing is here the process of making the knowledge available independently from source or media at the right time in a form suitable to a specific user. The area remit involves mainly Human Computer Interaction methodologies. I will discuss how some of the current technologies cope with the requirements, and show some successful applications applied in real world environments. Finally I will try to draw a list of desiderata for future technologies.
